At Upton, we follow the Government published Letters and Sounds Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics.

This is a teaching programme for synthetic phonics which concentrates on promoting speaking and listening, phonological awareness and oral blending which helps the children develop their reading and spelling skills.

We introduce the sounds that the individual letters and groups of letters make, using the Jolly Phonics Programme which introduces an action to accompany the sounds.  This aids the children in remembering the sounds the letters make.  This system is used from Reception through to KS1.

When your child starts school, you will receive an induction pack and this will contain information relating to phonic development and how you can support this at home. Developing a good phonetical knowledge and being able to apply this in reading and writing is vital. Children will have daily phonics sessions which will incorporate listening, segmenting and synthesising words and the opportunity to practice writing.

Children are continuously assessed as to their progress in phonics and additional provision may be implemented to support children’s development. Towards the end of Year 1 the children will be subject to the national phonics screening check. If you would like to know more about phonic development, please come in and talk to your child’s teacher.
